From the Atellan Farces in 391 BC, through Renaissance street performances of Commedia dell'arte; Stanislavski in the Victorian era and beyond, to well-loved TV shows such as "Whose Line is it Anyway", Improvisation has been both the beating heart and bedrock of theatre.
By understanding and experiencing the theories and mechanics of Improvisation, we become much better placed when it comes to performing scripted work on stage.
It is through Improvisation that we may understand our characters more fully, explore subtexts, create and develop the germs of ideas and grow them into vibrant new works, freeing our creative minds and allowing ourselves to play with our - often hidden - instincts for spontaneity.
As well as enhancing acting skills, Improvisation is well known to be of great benefit in other areas of life such as, increased confidence, improved decision-making, improved listening and observation, public speaking, and many more.
Through many and varied games and exercises, and with an emphasis on comedy, this workshop begins with looking at the first rule of Improvisation. It then follows on with the other first rule of Improvisation, and continues by examining three other first rules of Improvisation!
We will discover abilities and mental dexterity that will surprise ourselves and others, and have many laughs along the way.
This workshop is of particular benefit to those who have not had the opportunity of formal training in drama, and is geared both to professional performers and amateur groups.
